Commando Unit Overview and Base Perks
Commandos do not appear in the standard player tech tree. While early game builds prior to Beta v3.0.0 allowed direct player deployment, modern versions restrict the unit to AI forces, campaign scripts, and specific pre-deployed map assignments. A standard Commando formation consists of three soldiers deployed in a triangular arrangement: a squad leader carrying a communications backpack, a field combat medic, and an assault infantryman. Standard models carry M16 rifles, while the Brazil cosmetic variant equips FN FAL rifles.
The baseline unit operates through four passive traits:
- Healing: Restores 25 percent of total health at the start of each friendly turn, allowing the squad to survive prolonged engagements without nearby support trucks.
- Ambush: Automatically executes the opening strike when attacked by enemy infantry, provided the squad did not fire during the prior turn.
- Radio: Designates fire mission targets for allied artillery and naval vessels within a two-tile radius.
- Capture: Secures enemy and neutral installations, including supply depots, factories, and outposts.
Commando Variant Specifications
Advanced difficulty settings and scenario maps feature specialized Commando offshoots. These variants alter core weaponry, perk counts, and mobility limits.
| Commando Variant | Distinct Loadout and Perks | Tactical Role |
|---|---|---|
| Commando (Base) | Assault rifles, 25% Healing, Ambush, 2-Tile Radio, Capture | Frontline infantry combatant and forward spotter for indirect artillery strikes. |
| Commando V2 | Assault rifles, 14% Healing, Multi Attack (2x), Multi Move (2x), 2-Tile Radio, Capture | Rapid flanking specialist with double action capability, found in scenarios like Monstrosity of Steel. |
| Commando H | Assault rifles, RPG, Healing, Ambush (Assault Rifle only), 2-Tile Radio, Capture | Anti-armor infantry unit deployed in Rigged mode on Forge Moria. |
| Commando H+ | Assault rifle, RPG, Sniper rifle, Multi Attack (2x), Healing, Ambush (Assault Rifle only), Radio, Capture | Long-range multi-target sniper squad deployed in Rigged mode on Enroll Desertion. |
Commando V2 trades the original Ambush passive for extra health, two actions per turn via Multi Move, and two strikes per turn through Multi Attack. In contrast, the heavy H variants introduce armor-piercing anti-tank weapons. Commando H gains an RPG to target heavy vehicles, while Commando H+ adds both an RPG and a sniper rifle to pick off support targets from range.
Mission Spawns and Difficulty Scaling
Commandos appear across distinct mission tiers. Players encounter them directly in scripted missions like Woodland Warfare, but their presence increases sharply on higher difficulties.
On Tryhard difficulty, enemy infantry receive automatic veterancy levels upon deployment. When campaigns are played on Rigged difficulty, the game replaces enemy Riflemen and standard Grunts with fully evolved Commando squads. Because Rigged difficulty disables continuous passive income from captured buildings, facing squads that regenerate a quarter of their health every turn creates severe resource pressure if engagements drag out.
Combat Counters and Tactical Blind Spots
Neutralizing Commandos requires playing outside the engagement rules that favor them. Direct infantry confrontations trigger their Ambush perk, ensuring your squads take first-strike damage before firing.
Ranged and indirect weaponry bypass this hazard completely:
- Artillery Bombardment: Calling in shells from a Howitzer inflicts direct blast damage and pins the squad, shutting down their movement and weapon firing for the following turn.
- Armor Superiority: Standard Commandos carry small arms that inflict zero structural damage to armored hulls. An armored vehicle like the Battle Tank can roll within firing distance and knock out the squad across one or two rounds. Keep tanks at a four-tile distance when facing Commando H or H+ units to stay outside RPG striking range.
- Suppression Weapons: Light Gunners and IFVs suppress Commandos from diagonal angles or ranges exceeding one tile, preventing the unit from returning fire or closing distance to capture nearby objectives.
